Award Winning, Grand Design Featured

Rural Design are committed to a progressive yet sensitive rural architecture. We respond to each client with imagination to deliver a project that achieves social, economical and environmental sustainability. Our approach combines practicality and intuition to achieve overall design excellence. Based on the Isle of Skye in the West Highlands of Scotland we are working on residential, commercial, community and education projects throughout Scotland and occasionally abroad.

Our portfolio of work emphasises the diversity of design skills we can offer. We consciously avoid a prescriptive style, with each project being based upon a rigorous analysis of the clients requirements, the site and the landscape context. Our work is characterised by a crisp and contemporary approach; however it is always grounded by an understanding of history and a respect for the environment.

A key element of our approach is sustainable and innovative design. Our collective knowledge, skills and experience, accumulated over years of practice, allow us to continuously seek improvements in the design and services we offer and to seek innovative design solutions in line with our clients' expectations. Rural Design combines the best qualities of a small innovative practice with the experience, depth and knowledge of a large office, enabling it to undertake advanced and complex projects.

We approach each project with the same guiding view, a unique proposition that requires a unique solution.

Views at Every Window

Set high above the roof tops of the village, the breath-taking views at every window mean you'll not need any pictures on the walls!

Why Heat?

We believe efficiency should last and be built into homes, so we implement high levels of insulation so you don't have to worry about ever running up unnecessary heating bills. Our results mean that the average 4-5 bed detached home could cost as little as £350 per year for heating and electricity!

Zero Maintenance

With around 30 tons of concrete in the floor slabs, these houses self regulate the heat, absorbing the suns energy during the day and slowly releasing warmth through the evening

Standing seam roofs are widely believed to be the best roof money can buy. Typically seen on the most exclusive of properties, they clad the whole roof structure in an impregnable barrier that has no penetrations whatsoever!

Windows and doors are the highest quality and come with Aluminium cladding to minimise maintenance.

An Airtight home is now regulation, but to pass the test, new houses need to score below 15. Our homes are nearer to 1! As a guide you might have heard of Passive Houses, the standard set to become a passive house is 0.6. At these levels of airtightness it is feasible for candles to heat your home! Why heat a house for all that heat to escape into the atmosphere?
